Maxine Mars got her last name from Replacements drummer Chris Mars.
Jules Woodrow was named in honor of Julian "Jools" Holland, world-renowned pianist and one of the original members of Squeeze.
Damon was named for a contestant I saw once on VH1's Rock 'n' Roll Jeopardy!.
James Anderson was named after Andrew James, the original bass player for Midnight Oil.
Ian Grey's name was taken from Tom Grey, singer for The Brains and the composer of the song "Money Changes Everything" which was made a hit by Cyndi Lauper. I don't recall why I chose the name "Ian", though.
Gisele had her name taken from a character from a single episode of the American dub of Pokemon. Her last name, Siegel, came from rearranging the letters in her first name.
Tim Shihonmatsu's last name was from a character in Animation Runner Kuromi.
comic titles
The comic's title "Dubmarine" was taken from the title of a Yachts song, which was the B-side of their final single "A Fool Like You" (as it happens, the song was actually just a "dub" remix of the A-side). The title of the Yachts instrumental "Spimosa" was then appropriated for the name of the fictional company in the comic.
The original plan was for each Dubmarine comic to be named for a song. Here is a list of the artists and the albums.
